Let my tune-up begin!!

I have just finished reading the best book on the bodies dietary needs and I’m pumped! Please read the previous blog ‘Robbed of the Joy of Eating’ describing how I was initially impacted by this book, ‘The Fast Metabolism Diet’ by Haylie Pomroy. I’m thrilled and can’t wait to get you pumped up! I am looking forward to sharing my journey with you!…

I want to share some amazing things I’ve learned from my personal nutritionist Haylie Pomroy (she says I can call her that!). One of the big eye openers she shares in her book is that calories are the expenditure of energy, not a countable quantity. You can’t count the 250 calorie piece of pie the same as the exercise that your tracker says expends 250 calories. You’re not balancing a checkbook.

I know, my mind was blown too! Here’s a metaphor to help you out…

So let’s say you are in a teepee with a 3 log fire burning and it is burning hot because the logs are very dry. That counts as a 3 log fire. Now let’s say you burn 3 wet logs in an outside fire pit. They light and are burning but not well. That too is a 3 log fire. Do you think those around the outside fire are as warm as those around the fire in the teepee? Just because something has (in this case) 3 calories doesn’t mean it will burn the same or produce the same results. The rate of burn and the housing play an integral role!

Did you know there are carbs in lettuce?! If your body has an extremely low metabolism (burn rate) then you might as well be stacking wet heavy logs… around your waist, around your arms, and on your butt! Salad or bread or whatever the body will hold on to them for fear they are your last carbs and they NEED them in order to survive the (often self inflicted) famine. Crazy right?

Haylie describes how we need to learn to love food again! You aren’t helping yourself when you stress out about what you should be eating of if you ate the wrong thing or what you’re going to eat at an event. Stress increases cortisol which in turn minimizes the effect of thyroid hormone. The LAST thing I want happening! Aside from relearning that food is lovable we also need to remember that it is a gift form God! A pleasure he gave us that satan has distorted. See Robbed of the Joy of Eating.

Psalm 94:19

When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought joy to my soul.

Got side tracked (God is a fabulous reason to sidetrack!) Back on point….

I was one who would put activities onto a tracker like “active play with kids – 100 calories per hour” to be sure I balanced out what I ate. I didn’t want to eat too much, but quite frankly I could gain weight eating salad everyday and was seeing no progress. Anyone else in that boat?

The other issue, the one closest to my heart, is my health. My weight being stubborn despite my efforts are in large part due to my hypothyroidism, the very organ responsible for that internal fire is your thyroid. Mine is constantly under attack by my immune system. I needed to halt the attack on my thyroid and get it working well again. That’s why this diet is so exciting! It’s not a ‘diet’ it’s a way of eating for life. It’s learning how to make food work for you and to leave behind the foods (and non foods we eat anyway) that are working against you or at best keeping you from moving forwards.

My insulin resistance caused my system to fall victim to PCOS also. I needed to learn how to have food work for me and not continue the habits that were causing it to turn on me! She mentions ditching wheat, dairy, and caffeine because they cause irritation and inflammation in the GI tract which slow your bowels and create insulin resistance! What a discovery! I knew wheat bothered me, I’ve been gluten free for a while now, but it had never been connected with my sugar issues so directly!

There is some much I want to share but this is enough exciting news for one blog. Go grab your book today, right now! You can buy it e-reader style but there are recipes and pages that you can fill out so it helps to have a paper copy.

I want to hear from you! Let me know where your journey takes you as you regain a healthy hormonal balance and enjoy the joy of eating again! I’d love the company on my journey!

More to come! Hold on tight!

PS. I want to thank the Lord for his wisdom and guidance because no journey without him will ever be the success that it can be when you have him in it! Thank you Lord! Amen!

Proverbs 16:3
Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and your plans will succeed.

  1. I have recently asked the Lord into my life after many years of running from him and I know that finding this blog was no accident, but divine intervention! You see, I have been a type 2 diabetic for 15 years, having been diagnosed when I was 30. I never really gave it much thought (severe case of denial) until this past summer, when an emergency health issue occurred and I was in the hospital for a week. Long story short, I was put on insulin in addition to Metformin. However, in 5 months I gained 30 lbs, my hair was thinning, I felt so tired all the time and just plain blah, even though I had cut out the majority of junk food, walked 30-45 minutes a day and was using light weights. I figured it was because I wasn’t doing any other physical activity due to my being laid off and being slighty depressed. I went to see a new endocrinologist in February who ordered several blood tests, and come to find out not only did I have to deal with diabetes, but now have to deal with Hashimoto’s Disease as well. I was relieved to find out there was a reason for feeling the way I did, but then became really discouraged because I didn’t know how I was going to fix this in addition to actively dealing with my diabetes issue. I had finally reached my breaking point with all the negativity that seemed to be surrounding me, and I just broke down and asked God to come back into my life and help me heal, because I couldn’t do this on my own. He has brought some wonderful people into my life to help me on my journey and now I have found you! I am so excited and look forward to following your blog. I am hopeful (for the first time) that your blog and the book may just be what I need to start living a healthy and blessed life! Thank you for sharing your story with all of us! 🙂

    • Thank you so much for sharing! I just started a “peer review” page to share testimonies. Could I post this comment there? If you could find me on Facebook (Melissa Bouchard Phipps) so I could have a picture to go with it that would be wonderful.
Thank you for your testimony. I’m so humbled to have been able to encourage you. God is so good! This has become a Holy Spirit driven ministry and I’m blessed to be who he chose to use. I am believing with you for complete healing! Put God’s word into your heart and you’ll see his grace abound! Hugs to you!
