Victory Lap 2

I keep seeing such amazing results from my insulin resistance/ elimination diet! Please read the previous Victory Lap for the missing details as I continue to share my victorious adventure!

Today is day 6 of my food experiment and i discovered this morning that it was helping me more then I was even able to realize!…I won’t go into real detail for those guys that are trying this because it will help them tremendously as well, but for the ladies I discovered my victory was far more reaching then even I had any idea!

My period started this morning and I had no idea it was around the corner!

Okay, okay. I can hear it. “How did you have no idea? And how is this exciting news?”

My period is hormonally controlled (as is yours) and my hormones are far from balanced or normal, so my periods are long and the space between them is usually short, a couple weeks or so. Well today is day 21! That speaks VOLUMES TO ME! This diet started around the day my period should have. That’s just fantastic and crazy all at the same time!

The exciting part: I felt no PMS symptoms! NONE! I was even in the ER with a very high fevered baby boy 2 nights ago and was in complete control! I felt calm and level headed instead of a tearful mess, or an angry monster. Thus why I didn’t see this periods’ start date coming at all. Of any stress that can make me appear crazy, a 15 month old with a 105.1 degree fever is truly a contender!

My system really responded well to lowering my sugar intake by dropping all foods except the carrots and fish and sipping on the insulin resistance mix of lemon juice, lime juice, cucumber, and a splash of maple syrup. I sip it every 15 minutes! I wish I had done this years ago. My body really is healing on the insides. I feel energized. When I run in the cold cold air I don’t overheat or feel sick. I can go to bed at night and I’m not wide awake at 3am for no reason. On and On it’s been fantastic!

I did introduce milk on Monday, day 4, and there was no reaction. No swelling, the reaction I get most often, and no other side effect. I was so relieved! Many can’t do dairy but it’s my favorite source of fat and protein aside from fish so I was worried. I even had a small buttermilk GF biscuit with no issue! It was such a  relief!

 

 

Here’s the big thing I’m realizing….

The more I research and the longer I do this elimination diet the more I truly believe that my system was most upset by my sugar intake. I had a small (1/4 cup) scoop of Bryers pure ice cream in vanilla. (There are 3 ingredients total in it! Fabulous!) I was good as gold! No craving for more after, no sleepiness or lethargy, and no bloating. Then I ran across an article that I think really explains what my food experiment is helping me heal myself from, and it’s sugar.

Though the article is titled “Eggs don’t cause Heart attacks, sugar does” by Dr. Mark Hyman it discusses sugar in general as a health risk, and really says what we all need to understand…

It’s sugar, not fat, that causes heart attacks.”

…and many other serious health risks. The thing is, hollow sugar calories are what make my body spike it’s insulin, causing my thyroid to work harder to balance out the jump, causing the adrenals to get the liver to put out back-up sources of fuel to help stay-off the hypoglycemic response my body is so good at. It is why I think my system jumped over into Hashimoto’s disease (along with a high stress retail management life for a decade and then pregnancy). My system was constantly trying to balance the huge intake of Red Bull and Coke-a-Cola that I was living on while being a server in a restaurant and later as a mall employee. I rarely had a chance to stop and eat. As a result, here I am in my mid thirties with a full blown autoimmune disease that I refuse to let be the victor here! Here’s more from the article….

“As it turns out, sugar calories are deadly calories. Sugar causes heart attacks, obesity, type 2 diabetes, cancer and dementia, and is the leading cause of liver failure in America. The biggest culprit is sugar-sweetened beverages including sodas, juices, sports drinks, teas and coffees. They are by far the single biggest source of sugar calories in our diet. In fact, more than 37% of our sugar calories come from soda.”

I can hear the comments now “well I use Splenda and Equal” or “I switched to Truvia”. Here’s the deal, fake sweeteners that are encouraged to help you avoid sugar are all chemicals. If concrete were sweet would you put in your food? It’s calorie free and happy for your waist line, right? NO! Of course not. Diabetics, however, are encouraged to use fake chemical based sweeteners all the time (no, not concrete). Clogging their liver and kidney’s and  causing intestinal issues that can lead straight to autoimmune disease and other serious problems. Truvia is a bit different, it is sugar. So if you are still consuming huge quantities in the name of it being a healthier substitute, it’s still sugar, you still use insulin to process it and you still need the thyroid, adrenals, and other organs to get it through your system. Though it may be a better alternative you still need to treat it the same way you need to treat cane sugar, extremely limit it’s usage. Since I’d have to limit them either way, I just chose to enjoy the sweet goodness of cane sugar.

The best sugar is true raw sugar in small amounts. Dropping your soda for a fresh sugarless green tea or ice cold lemon water. And noting that when you eat too much sugar you probably feel sleepy, or crave sweets (ironic right?) after your meal. That’s because it leaves your system trying to balance out, but it’s failing and it’s craving more. Listen to your body! It’s telling you that was too much sugar and to lower the intake your next meal. Sugar is disguised in carbohydrates, so pasta alfredo is not the healthy meal it may appear to be.

Limiting your carb intake is crucial or you haven’t actually limited your sugar.

I’m finally learning to listen to my body. I am also amazed at how this all matches the word of God…

Genesis 1:29 And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food.

Sugar cane and even Truvia plants were put on the earth by God for us to use and enjoy. (Sorry, there is no Equal or Splenda tree, so they need to be cut out of the diet). As with all things they are to be enjoyed in moderation. Lunch was never suppose to be a 64 oz soda with a doughnut. I know, there are moments a doughnut is awesome, but it needs to be as rare a treat as a seasonal Easter peep, or Valentine’s Day box of chocolates. Not a daily habit!
