“The sad truth is that much of what we eat is not really food.” #2

“What the Heck Should I Eat” ~Mark Hyman

Mind. Blown.

If we aren’t eating food then what are we eating?
“Every bite you take is a powerful opportunity to CREATE HEALTH or to PROMOTE DISEASE.” Mark Hyman

Let that hit you… you can create health or promote disease. Which do you think big pharma is leaning towards? Which one do you think God wants you to live in? Those two answers are very different…and constantly at odds with each other.

Food is the absolute best medicine. Dr. Hyman lists it can…

  • Improve the expression of thousands of genes
  • Balance dozens of hormones
  • Optimize protein networks
  • Reduce Inflammation
  • Optimize your microbiome (gut flora)
  • It can cure chronic disease
  • It works faster and cheaper than any drug ever discovered

Drugs have side effects. Just yesterday I saw a new ad for a disease I had never heard of. I discovered that the disease was man made, a side effect so bad from a bipolar/depression medication that it merited a name and a medication to mitigate it…
That is atrocious!

Side effects from food are good ones. If you are eating clean foods after eating chemical laden food substitutes you may have withdrawal issues and therefore be sick for a while as you heal…this is not a food side effect, this is withdrawal recovery! “The side effects of food are prevention, reversal, and even treatment of disease.” (page 11)

What is stopping us from this amazing benefit of real food?!?

FEAR. Yup… Convenience. Cost.

We need to be able to push passed the fact that cooking is scary and takes time! It’s not a lack of desire to get well…it’s the intimidation and perceived inconvenience surrounding the task of learning how to go back to real food instead of throwing a meal in the microwave from the freezer! We need to be willing to budget the time to either prep meal’s on Sundays and eat them through the week or take the time to cook each day. Our busy schedule would come to a screeching halt if we were severely ill and could no longer function… making life slow down for 60 minutes an evening to assure our health and a longer life should be a top priority!

How inconvenient is chronic pain? Brain fog? Being awake all night? Not being able to focus?

Let’s get started on eating real food! RIGHT NOW!

Find one recipe from a holiday (that’s when we usually cook, yes?) or from a grandparent (they were the last generation who really had to cook regularly, and they are a fabulous resource!) and try to get the ingredients together at home. Do you have what you need to get that meal going? Our favorite is a small whole chicken around 6 pounds set in a pot with salt, pepper, whole carrots, cut red potatoes, and yellow onions. It’s like a mini thanksgiving! Everyone loves it. The broth with a little gluten free flour rue makes wonderful gravy.

This book will dive into many food categories so you can choose the cleanest best options for your family, but if you have not created a window with which to cook and prepare it, you likely won’t be able to do anything with the clean food once you buy it.

Getting into a habit of cooking is a fabulous way to get started!

Eating healthy doesn’t have to mean struggling to get dinner on, or everyone hating the meal. Try and do this one day a week…it takes 30 days to create a habit, and this is one habit you can live well with!

Please share your meal below! I would love to hear!

As you eat give thanks! Mental attitude about food affects how your hormones respond to it, and how it is digested! God knew this all along. <3

1 Corinthians 10:31
So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

Blessings!

  1. We personally love making grilled chicken and rice! We also do grilled chicken with fondant potatoes! They are an older way of cooking potatoes but seriously delicious
